About FanBoy

Hi Everyone, my name is Tyson.

I love biking, all kinds of biking, including: mountain, bike packing, touring and fat biking. I'm fortunate to live in an area of the Rockies with access to plenty of trails and climates that add variety.

I grew up working in a bike shop in southeast Idaho. I really got into the sport, the biking community and soon had my first pro-deal purchase worth more than my college car. 20 years later I'm now an engineer that designs products for aerospace, oil and gas, military and start-ups. I'm good at what I do and love seeing clients succeed with solving technical challenges. I still love biking and getting together with coworkers for group rides after work.

In 2024 I decided to solve a problem I was having while loading my bike packing rig (Surly Grappler with 8 pack rack) for an overnighter. My bike was completely loaded with water bottles, snacks, tent, bag, spare clothes, battery but couldn't make room for my light which I needed due to a late start. There was too much gear on my bars and rack to make any room for my light and huge battery pack.

That's when I decided to solve the problem by developing a rack mounted option that would stay out of the way of gear, bars and line of site. This light needed to be smaller, more compact but not sacrifice on optics. A few months later I proposed a rough proof of concept to  several group pages and received a positive reponse.

I then assembled a dozen prototypes and shipped these to the US and Mexico to a group of Beta Testers (thanks again Brian, Oscar, Alan and many more) to test out and provide some valuable feedback.

The Beta test group already owned Surly 8 & 24 pack racks mounted to Surly Karate Monkeys, Ogres, etc, they provide picks of their own setup with the light and remote attached.

Fast forward 6 months of additional R&D, BOM scrubbing, performance testing, DFM, and the FanBoy Light is now ready for owners of the Surly™ 8 & 24 pack racks to put to work on their own rigs saving you space, weight and worry.

This passion project has taken me on a new journey full of ups and down, some great collaboration and new friendships made in and out of the industry. When the presale is over I plan to release "The making of FanBoy"which may may just inspire the next home mechanic/weekend warrior to put an idea down on a napkin and get after it!

Feel free to reach out when you are ready to order or install. Happy to help with any last minute questions as well.

Happy Trails,

Tyson
